Summary
Ayaan Shaikh and Yasmin Sayed Reclaim Control to Reach the Quarterfinal Decider
Ayaan Shaikh and Yasmin Sayed needed only 23 rallies to take the opening game 15-6, but Mohammad Nadaf and Riya Haldankar turned the match around before the decisive swing arrived in game three.
The second-seeded pair began game two with a 2-0 lead, then Nadaf and Haldankar answered with four straight points and built an 8-4 advantage at the interval. Shaikh and Sayed kept closing the gap, drawing level at 13-13 after trailing 13-9. The seventh seeds, however, finished with the last two rallies to force a decider, 15-13.
That recovery did not carry into the third game. Shaikh and Sayed opened 2-0 and then won four consecutive rallies to move from 1-2 to 1-6. They reached the interval 8-2 ahead and stayed in front, closing out 15-8 after 37 minutes on Court 6.
The less obvious difference was how the match changed at key moments. Shaikh and Sayed won 10 of 16 clutch rallies, compared with six for Nadaf and Haldankar, and their six-rally best streak was twice the seventh seeds’ longest run. They also won 9 of 15 game-opening rallies, helping them seize the decider immediately after losing game two.
Nadaf and Haldankar deserve credit for extending the match and recovering from 9-13 to 13-13 in the second game. But Shaikh and Sayed owned the opening and closing chapters, earning their place in the next round with a 15-6, 13-15, 15-8 victory.
