Semifinal · Match #6 · Court 5 · Sun, Aug 9, 12:21 PM

Summary

Anjana Kumari and Sufiya Shaikh Reclaim Control to Reach the Final

Anjana Kumari and Sufiya Shaikh opened their semifinal by taking eight of the first 10 rallies, then held off a late surge from Shivanjali Thite and Shreya Mehta to win the first game 15-10 on Court 5. The second seed looked in command again at 7-2 in the second, but the match turned sharply there: Shivanjali and Shreya won seven of the next eight rallies to move ahead 9-8, then closed the game 15-9 to force a decider.

The deciding game began level at 1-1 before Anjana and Sufiya produced the defining run. They won seven straight rallies to lead 8-1, and reached the mid-game interval at 8-1 before extending the advantage to 13-2. Shivanjali and Shreya answered with a five-rally burst, but the deficit was too large; Anjana and Sufiya finished 15-7 after 35 minutes.

The less obvious edge was at the starts. Anjana and Sufiya won 12 of the match’s 15 opening rallies, compared with three for their opponents, and won 24 of 39 rallies on their own serve. That early control helped them survive the second-game reversal without surrendering a lead in the recorded comeback figures. Shivanjali and Shreya deserve credit for overcoming a five-point deficit in the second game and taking 14 of 20 clutch rallies, but the second seed’s stronger game starts and decisive decider carried them through to match 7.
