Round of 16 · Match #4 · Court 5 · Fri, Aug 7, 7:13 PM

Summary

Dimple Revankar overturns first-game loss to defeat fifth seed Rifa Shaikh

Rifa Shaikh opened with a 15-7 game, but Dimple Revankar answered with the next two games to win their Round of 16 match 7-15, 15-5, 15-8 in 23 minutes on Court 5.

The decisive shift came immediately after the first-game interval. Revankar took the opening rally of game two, then won eight straight rallies from 1-1 to lead 8-1. Shaikh briefly stopped the run, but Revankar continued to 14-2 before Shaikh collected three successive points. The recovery was not enough: Revankar closed the game 15-5.

The pattern carried into the decider. Revankar started 3-0, led 8-2 at the mid-game interval and reached 14-5 before Shaikh won three consecutive rallies to make it 14-8. Revankar ended the match on the next rally.

The less obvious difference was how often Revankar controlled game openings: she won 10 of 15 game-start rallies, compared with Shaikh’s five. Her longest streak also reached eight rallies, twice Shaikh’s best of four. Shaikh, the fifth seed, won the first game and finished with 28 points, but Revankar took 37 overall and advances.
