Shreya Mehta vs Anjana Kumari

Semifinal · Match #14 · Court 2 · Sun, Aug 9, 10:21 AM

Summary

Anjana Kumari Survives First-Game Fight, Then Pulls Away From Shreya Mehta

Anjana Kumari needed just two points after 16-all, and she took both. That late first-game finish carried the second seed through a 18-16, 15-6 semifinal win over third seed Shreya Mehta in 29 minutes on Court 2, sending Kumari through to match 15.

Mehta opened the match better, moving 3-1 ahead and later reaching 5-3. Kumari’s first decisive response was a five-rally run from 5-5 to 5-10, but Mehta recovered to level at 11-11 and again at 13-13. The game then became a succession of narrow turns: 14-14, 15-15 and 16-16 before Kumari closed it out. Her maximum deficit overcome was two points, while Mehta’s largest surrendered lead was also two.

The less obvious shift came after the first-game interval. Kumari had won eight of the nine rallies before that break, yet Mehta took four of the nine after it, helping turn 8-11 into 11-11. Kumari still won the game’s last two rallies, then changed the match’s shape completely in game two.

Mehta took the opening rally, but Kumari answered with a five-rally streak to lead 1-5 and reached the interval at 2-8. Mehta won the first rally after the break, but Kumari restored control immediately, moving from 3-9 to 3-11 and eventually finishing 15-6. Kumari won 17 of 33 points on her serve and, more broadly, 33 points to Mehta’s 22. Mehta’s fight made the opening game close; Kumari’s start to the second made the semifinal decisive.
