Anjana Kumari Takes Women’s Singles Title After Decider Against Top Seed

Anjana Kumari’s route to the Women’s Singles title ended with a 43-point final, as the second seed defeated No. 1 Sufiya Shaikh 2–1 after 39 minutes on 9 Aug 2026, recorded at 3:42 pm. The result completed a three-win run in which Kumari collected six games to two and spent 110 minutes on court.

The 12-player main draw began with four byes and one walkover. Dimple Revankar, unseeded, removed No. 5 Rifa Shaikh in a three-game Round of 16 match, while Gauri Sawant beat No. 4 Aditi Chodankar 30–20 in points. No. 6 Shivanjali Thite advanced by bye, as did No. 3 Shreya Mehta and the top two seeds.

In the quarterfinals, Sufiya Shaikh beat Amaira Dhumatker 2–0, and Revankar followed her opening upset by taking down Gauri Sawant 2–0, winning 73% of the points. Shreya Mehta edged Shivanjali Thite by four points, 36–32, overcoming a four-point deficit. Kumari then survived the round’s longest match, beating Niharika Parwar 2–1 in 42 minutes.

The semifinals restored the seeded finalists’ path: Sufiya defeated Revankar 2–0, while Kumari beat No. 3 Mehta 2–0. The draw’s less obvious pattern was Kumari’s repeated dependence on deciding games: she won both she played, first against Parwar and then against Sufiya in the final. She also defeated two seeded opponents, including the top seed, to finish unbeaten.

With every match complete, Anjana Kumari is the champion, while Dimple Revankar’s two-win run stands as the draw’s unseeded breakthrough.
