Summary

Rahul Deswal Erases Two Early Deficits to Beat Sixth Seed Anuj Vernekar

Rahul Deswal turned two fast starts by sixth seed Anuj Vernekar into a straight-games win, taking the Round of 16 match 15-11, 15-8 on Court 4 in 43 minutes.

Vernekar opened the first game 3-1 ahead, but Deswal answered with four consecutive rallies to move in front at 5-3. Vernekar recovered again, winning six of the next eight rallies to turn 6-8 into a 10-8 lead. That was the decisive opening-game swing: Deswal levelled at 10-10, then won five of the next six rallies to take the game 15-11.

The second game followed a similar pattern, only more sharply. Vernekar led 4-1 and was still ahead 5-2 before Deswal took control. An 11-rally streak carried Deswal from 3-5 to 14-5, putting the match beyond reach despite Vernekar winning three of the final five rallies. Deswal closed it 15-8.

The less obvious edge was Deswal’s finishing. He won seven of 11 clutch rallies, compared with Vernekar’s four, and won 21 of 30 rallies when serving. Vernekar’s best streak was four; Deswal’s was 11, exactly the run that broke the second game open. Deswal advances, while Vernekar’s challenge ends after two recoveries that could not produce a game win.
