Sudhanva Udupa vs Arjun Bhagat

Round of 16 · Match #8 · Court 3 · Sat, Aug 8, 4:26 PM

Summary

Arjun Bhagat’s Nine-Rally Run Sets Up a Straight-Game Win

Arjun Bhagat needed only 15 minutes to move past Sudhanva Udupa, winning 15-4, 15-8 on Court 3 in the Round of 16. The second seed was scheduled for 4:20 pm, began at 4:26 pm and finished at 4:40 pm, advancing without a deciding game.

The opening game turned almost immediately. Udupa took the first rally, but Bhagat answered with nine straight points to lead 9-1. Udupa recovered three points in the next stretch, yet Bhagat restored control and closed the game with three of the final four rallies.

The second game offered Udupa a better opening. After falling 0-2 behind, he levelled at 2-2 and stayed within two points at 4-6. That was the closest the game became: Bhagat won the next three rallies to reach 9-4, then held the gap through the interval at 8-4 and finished 15-8.

The less obvious edge was Bhagat’s service performance. He won 20 of 29 service rallies, while Udupa took only three of 13 on his own serve. Bhagat also won seven of the 10 game-opening rallies, helping explain why Udupa’s brief second-game recovery never became a sustained challenge. Udupa did win eight of 23 late-game rallies in the second, but Bhagat’s early separation had already done the work.

Udupa’s two-game effort ended with 12 points, while Bhagat’s 30 carried the seeded player into the next round.
