Sahil Sayed vs Avinash Bhat

Qualifying Final · Match #18 · Court 6 · Fri, Aug 7, 8:27 PM

Summary

Sahil Sayed Survives Avinash Bhat in a Three-Game Qualifying Final

Sahil Sayed needed 30 minutes and three games to move through the qualifying final, defeating Avinash Bhat 15-11, 14-16, 15-10 on Court 6.

The match opened with Bhat taking the first rally, but Sayed soon found the decisive opening in game one. From 5-5, he won seven of the next eight rallies to lead 12-6, then held off Bhat's late response to take the game 15-11. Bhat's best reply came in the second: he reached the interval 8-3 ahead and, after Sayed levelled at 9-9, edged the closing phase to win 16-14 and force a decider.

The third game turned twice. Bhat recovered from 3-1 down to lead 5-3, but Sayed answered with five straight rallies and reached the interval 8-6 ahead. At 8-8, Sayed again produced the key run, taking five consecutive rallies for 13-8. Bhat narrowed the gap to 14-10, but Sayed closed the match on the next rally.

The less obvious edge was Sayed's response after intervals: he won nine of 15 rallies both before and after them, while Bhat won six in each split. Sayed also won 23 of 37 receiving rallies, compared with 21 of 44 on serve, making his return play the stronger part of his points total. Bhat won the second game and repeatedly recovered deficits, but Sayed's two five-plus rally bursts in the decider carried him into the next qualifying match.
