Semifinal · Match #14 · Court 1 · Sun, Aug 9, 10:43 AM

Summary

Shloke Utagi Overturns Fast Start to Beat No. 2 Seed Aariketh Chari

Aariketh Chari opened the semifinal three points clear, but Shloke Utagi answered with the match’s defining surge and won 15-12, 15-9 in 15 minutes on Court 1.

Chari led 3-0, then Utagi levelled at 3-3 before the second seed rebuilt a 7-4 advantage. Utagi’s response was decisive: he won the next four rallies to make it 8-7, then moved 11-8 ahead. Chari narrowed the gap to 11-9, but Utagi finished the game with three of the next four rallies.

The second game was tighter early. It was 4-4 and then 7-6 before Utagi broke clear, taking six consecutive rallies for a 13-7 lead. Chari stopped the run at 13-8 and added another point at 14-9, but Utagi closed the match on the next rally.

The less obvious detail is how sharply the contest changed after the first interval: Utagi won eight of the 12 rallies after it, while Chari won only four. Utagi also converted 17 of 30 rallies on his serve, compared with Chari’s eight from 21, a split that helped decide a match whose first game began with Chari in control.

Utagi advances to match 15. Chari’s second-seeded run ends in the semifinal, with both games competitive before Utagi’s late-game bursts settled them.
