Riyana Santarita Vas vs Saumya Volvoikar

Round of 16 · Match #6 · Court 4 · Fri, Aug 7, 4:00 PM

Summary

Saumya Volvoikar Turns a Level Game Into a 15–7 Finish

Saumya Volvoikar began with a three-point burst and finished with nine of the last ten rallies, beating Riyana Santarita Vas 15–10, 15–7 in 16 minutes on Court 4.

The third seed controlled the opening game early, moving 3–0 ahead before Riyana answered with four straight rallies to make it 6–7. That was the closest the game came to changing hands. Saumya restored a 9–6 lead around the interval and reached 14–7, although Riyana delayed the finish with three consecutive points.

The second game briefly looked different. Riyana turned a 1–4 deficit into a 6–4 lead, then edged ahead 7–6. Saumya levelled at 7–7, took the interval with an 8–7 advantage and then produced the decisive sequence: eight straight rallies after the interval to close out the match.

The less obvious detail is how sharply the match changed around the break. Riyana won five of the nine recorded rallies before the second-game interval but only one of the nine after it. Saumya reversed that pattern, winning eight of nine after the interval. Across the match, Saumya also won 21 of 29 points on her serve, while Riyana won 9 of 18.

Riyana’s four-point surge in game two made the contest competitive, but Saumya Volvoikar’s response erased that opening and carried her into the next round.
